Draft Coach Mike Ditka to The United States Senate We would be better served by representatives who are there AGAINST their will, who were badgered or even shamed into taking the job. In a way, I'm describing what happened to George Washington. He refused the overture toward making him a monarch and he did not want a second term as President. He was persuaded by his colleagues to serve a second term because they were afraid the union might not survive without him at the time. The problem with the scoundrels we have now is that their ambition makes them weak. They do not want to risk their “careers” by making waves, exposing those who are corrupt. I want a representative who will not be bullied. When one of the Senators threaten to take him off of an important committee if he refuses to support some moronic scheme that he knows is bad for this country, I want the representative who will go out on the floor, in front of the cameras and tell the world exactly what is going on behind the scenes. Former Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka is an example of a man who is a proven leader, a businessman and someone who is very active in charity (unlike the politicians who are given seats on boards of charities to enhance their resumes while essentially doing nothing more than lending their name.). Ditka was approached in 2006 to run for the Illinois Senate seat once held by Senator Jack Ryan (who left due to a sex scandal). He was open minded to taking the job - but wasn't seeking it. Ditka ended up declining to run because of some business obligations he had at the time. This seat is now being vacated by Barack Obama and there may even be a special election held for the seat early 2009. Ditka stated that he would be concerned about how he might handle himself in the Senate because of his temper. By God – someone with a temper is exactly what we NEED out there! Too many in Congress and the Senate appear to be there for the wrong reasons. Some have made their fortunes and now want to be a part of the most exclusive club on Earth. Some go there to enrich themselves. Some are there because they want to some day be President
I'm tired of the old platitude "he went to Washington to change Washington - then Washington changed him!" That continues to happen because the people we send are often far from true patriots. Many are ambitious egotists who want to:
a. be President some day
b. be part of the most exclusive club in the world
c. enrich themselves
d. all of the above
During the founding era, it was considered gauche to campaign for oneself the way they all do now. They run around the country for years bragging on themselves hoping to get traction. Every 2-4 years we see new parasites "working their way up" from state legislatures telling us how THEY are going to CHANGE Washington - YET - we keep getting the same results. Then we wonder WHY! We wonder WHY they keep selling us out with these ridiculous schemes of theirs.
It's because of the way we have been conditioned our entire lives to accept that this is "the way it is done". They start out running for the homeowners association, then City Council, then the state legislature, then US Congress, then Senate, then President. Each time they graduate to a higher office by getting "experience" at kissing lots of ass and selling us out.
At the crux of my entire dissertation is this: If we want a revolution - we will only get it buy DRAFTING the people who DON'T WANT THE JOB.
We are used to settling for self serving charlatans because whenever we find a great leader with great credentials and a genuine passion for people (like Ditka as ONE example) - they usually turn down the job.
A typical scenario is the party approaches them with the idea of running - they say they will think about it. Next they talk to their spouse and perhaps their children.
They often come back with an answer of NO - because:
a. They worked hard being successful and now want to spend more time with their family.
b. Their family doesn't want them to run because they see that politics is too dirty and don't want to go through that experience.
c. They are making too much money to leave what they are doing.
All of those are legitimate excuses BUT - my proposed movement is to STOP taking no for an answer. I'm not saying that there should be a literal, military style draft for representatives. That would never happen because the current batch of snake-oil salesmen would have to essentially legislate themselves out of their elite club.
When I say we stop taking no for an answer, here's what I mean: I mean that we need to badger and/or shame them into taking the job.
We need to say, "look, we know you don't want the job because you want to spend more time with your family. That is exactly WHY we need YOU - and NOW. Your country needs you BECAUSE you are a real leader, not by the definition that Washington assigns to "leader". To them a leader is someone who can charm, coerce and make as many of their colleagues happy as possible.”
“Your country needs you because you are not going to go there making decisions based upon how it will affect your chances of some day becoming President - but rather to do the actual job you were sent there to do - to serve the Constitution regardless of whether it is popular.”
“Making too much money to leave what you are doing? That's valid BUT - if we don't get some genuine patriots out there to bring back our constitution - ASAP - your money is going to be worthless and your private property will no longer be YOUR property. As AMERICANS - it's not our place to say WHEN someone has made enough money - but you have done well in this country and now we are calling on you to do something that will outlast you and all of your possessions"
“We do not have the luxury of taking no for an answer. There is no cause more expedient than this one. Although I find your decline of this request has great merit, throughout history great men and women have been called to lead at great sacrifice. In 1776 our founding fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. We are calling upon you to temporarily put your life and fortune on hold for your country and posterity. We will not accept your decline and we will continue to build our grassroots support for your candidacy in every way possible as we believe you will ultimately do what is best for your country.”
THIS is the difference between how things have been done up until now and how we need to do things going forward. We cannot accept their declines. We need to PRESSURE good men and women who are accomplished leaders, outstanding human beings and who preferably meet the #1 qualification – do not WANT the job.
Ditka can be the first of many that “we the people” decide to DRAFT as our party nominees going forward.
