The FDA to the Rescue; Your Children are now Safe!
by MrArbitrage

Accoring to www.MarketWatch.com -- "The Senate approved legislation Thursday that would give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco for the first time."

Feel any better now?  I am quite confident that when this bill is passed and the FDIC has authority over "big Tobacco" - this endeavor will be hugely successful. That is if you define success by the number of billions of dollars that will be siphoned off into the back pockets of the elected imbeciles and their cronies over a period of years. How? I don't know - but believe me - it's always about the money.

I love it when you hear people like that elected murderer in Mass talk about all of the children who are going to be "saved" by their fleecing. These people are the most unworthy frauds ever entrusted with fiduciary responsibility in contemporary history.

They do this under the guise of "children's health".  The reality is that the states they represent, as a result of THEIR own handiwork - DEPEND on cigarette sales to fund many of their legislated schemes. These states and their elected imbeciles NET at least 3X as much from cigarette sales as the tobacco companies that make the things.

Thanks to the prodigality of these rapacious fools, they will be in much more trouble if people stop smoking - than they already are from their current budget shortfalls.

I don't apologize for my contempt for these Nimrods. When I think of the brilliant minds like Adams Hamilton & Madison - the leadership and integrity of men like Washington - I am appalled to think that these snake-oil scoundrels occupy the same offices as those great men we venerate.

It really is like putting a silk hat on a pig, although I should give the proverbial pig the benefit of a doubt. The very thought of it is an absolute disgrace and it is a testament of the idiocracy in which we now find ourselves. We need to start from scratch.

Thought you could just "check out" of TARP?  Goldman & Morgan: Welcome to the "Hotel Pennsylvania"
(Avenue that is)
by MrArbitrage

We’re now hearing about Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and other financial institutions wanting to get out from under “the TARP”.  It’s kind of surreal reading headlines like “will Obama allow them to repay TARP money???”  I seem to rememeber this program being sold to us with the pitch that the goal would be to get the tax payers repaid as soon as possible.  Now all of the sudden Obama can't wait to convert dividend paying Preferred stock into Common stock.

It just confirms what many of us suspected.  This isn’t about saving the economy – it’s about RESHAPING the economy -and government- into some crazy, new blend of Islamarxism led by the radical left wing.  (Read my column "The Diabolical Genius of TARP" at www.OurHussein.com )

This scenario brings to mind the lyrics of the old Eagles song:

"Relax,' said the night man, 'We are programmed to receive.  You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave."

The financial companies made their deal with our Hussein.  There's no going back; but then so did the voters of this country.  In that sense I get the creepy feeling that  we all may have checked in to the Hotel California.

Warren Buffett's Sudden Disenchantment
by MrArbitrage

“Buffett criticizes bank stress tests” reads the headline at www.marketwatch.com

A couple quotes by Buffet and his colleague Charlie Munger that caught my attention:

“Buffett expressed concern that the people conducting the government stress test may take "percentage whacks" on certain assets, while not taking account of the different business models and holdings of individual banks.”

It’s amazing that someone with such prowess in investing could be so credulous about politics.  Imagine that, federal bureaucrats could make blanket generalizations and false assumptions regarding business?  You mean the elected imbeciles are not the “best and the brightest”????  This is a shocking revelation.

“The bank stress test is very likely to be done poorly… Maybe the whole idea was not such a good idea." - Charlie Munger

Now that’s just priceless.  Even though the destruction of our currency and the free markets really sucks in general, it’s almost a consolation to watch Buffett and Munger realize they adopted a rabid dog.  I realize that when Buffett speaks, people listen.  Maybe he should just speak about Berkshire Hathaway from now on.

Buffett should have kept his mouth shut during the elections.

I agree with what Buff said about the stress tests. I just found it amusing that he seems to be surprised by what he’s seeing from the Obama Administration, which he supported. That is the rabid dog that he adopted and he should not be surprised when it bites him in the assets.

Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy Geithner said Wednesday he was careless in failing to pay $34,000 in Social Security and Medicare taxes earlier this decade but declared "I have paid what I owed." He apologized to Congress."

I can totally understand Geithner's situation because my 5 year old son tried to pull something very similiar on me yesterday. He asked me for forgiveness, which I immediately granted (with a hug) but he didn't like the fact that forgiveness didn't mean that he was going to get his privileges back.

He pouted for a minute but he understood in the end. Next time he will think twice and probably won't repeat the offense. If I had forgiven AND removed the consequences, he probably would have thought Dad was a "push over".  Wouldn't he?It's a good thing that Obama's bringing us an ethical administration, no more "corruption and "cronyism".

This could be good for us if we are supposed to emulate Obama's sagacious pick to be in charge of the IRS. The new precedent will be that if we don't want to pay our Federal taxes this year, no problem, just say it was a mistake or an oversight.

Based upon his cabinet appointments, it looks like "transparency" means that he's going to screw us right out in the open instead of behind closed doors. Now that's progress!

The Dow is now down over 300 points on inauguration day.  They say that Wall Street likes "certainty" but apparently not - certain socialism.

Congratulations to the under 30 crowd who get their political knowledge from M-TV and Jon Stewert. 4 out of 5 of you sure did "rock our vote" and in the process voted yourselves out of a job for the next 8 years. Have fun sweeping the streets for Obama.

Time to Bring Water Boarding to Wall Street?
by MrArbitrage

The SIPC has said they're going to liquidate Bernie Madoff's brokerage firm in an effort to recover some of his customer's money.

It's time to get tough.  If we want to find all of the money likely hidden in offshore accounts, it may be time to bring water boarding to Wall Street, starting with Bernard Madoff.

On that note, I'd bet that many of those opposed to using such techniques on terrorists would suddenly experience a change of opinion on the practice.

On Blagojevich:

This guy strikes me as a "singer".  He may not have many people to bring down on this particular scandal but unless he came out of nowhere and became Governor overnight, I'll bet he has a great deal of dirt on many Illinois politicians on many levels.  Judging from Obama's veritable litany of scumbag associates, he probably has something unrelated on Obama.  That may be why Obama is handling with care.

I think that if Blago is facing prison, he would likely take as many with him as possible.

That leads me to my PREDICTION. I predict that if he is going to face serious prison and is about to start running his mouth too much, Blagojevich ends up catching SSS (Sudden Suicide Syndrome).

Somali Pirates are a Ridiculous Sham

by MrArbitrage

Oil closed up 10% today at $47.21

This is a complete suckers rally. The economy being what it is, demand will continue to decrease, OPEC nations will violate their agreement with one another, producing more and non-opec nations will produce more.

The Somali Pirate hijackings are a ridiculous sham.  OPEC nations in their greedy desperation paid the so-called pirates to hi-jack their own oil ships in an effort to revive the fear that drove speculation.

Seriously "my friends", we split the atom, we have rovers on Mars; we have mapped the human genome. In this day and age with Satellite, GPS, missile technology, if they want to keep some dilapidated pirate boats away - they CAN -  if they were not in collusion

Government Cannot Stop Housing Price Decline
by MrArbitrage

The US Government is trying to "stabilize" housing prices. They seemed to have forgotten the law of supply and demand. Here in Florida, we have far too many homes and condominiums due to the builders racing to build skyscrapers of them from Jacksonville to Miami without any of them doing due diligence on how many people are actually likely to move here while taking into account - how many skyscrapers their competitors are building.

This will probably have a negative effect on housing and condominium prices for at least the next decade. Before this slow, painful correction is over, we could realistically see housing prices – lower – than they were – before – the bubble began - because now we have hundreds of thousands more units than pre-bubble and many people actually leaving the state due to hurricanes, increasingly higher insurance costs and higher taxes.

The way to increase the price of houses when the problem is one of supply and demand is pictured below.

Option 1. Controlled burnings

Option 2. Start up the bulldozers

I'm only half joking.  The previous two options, absurd though they are - would probably be cheaper and more effective than anything these government half wits will come up with.  The Baby Boom generation overbuilt for the Baby Boom generation.  What's coming after them is not enough to support this superfluity of new homes.

Barack Obama & the abomination of desolation
by MrArbitrage

Tomorrow afternoon Barack Obama will stand before the Springfield State House to campaign with his Vice Presidential nominee where Abraham Lincoln once served.. I expect that he will stand in front of a picture of Lincoln and try to imply a correlation between himself and the venerable FIRST Republican President. He could only get away with such an abominable act of desecration due to the deficiency of American History curriculum in public education.

Without the ignorance of history upon which Obama greatly depends, people would easily recognize the glaring hypocrisy he displays by committing such an act.

Once upon a time in America, a majority of Whigs and a diminutive number of Democrats - disgusted with both of their party's approbation toward slavery - founded a NEW party upon the principal that A HUMAN BEING CANNOT BE THE THE PROPERTY OF ANOTHER HUMAN BEING.

These great men recognized the contradiction between their present reality and the proposition put forward in the Declaration of Independence that asserted all men are CREATED equal and that their rights and value as human beings come not by how much money they acquired or from what bloodline they came but rather by God.

The party of Lincoln has not changed much in its stance; neither has the Democrat Party changed since then. The Republican Party still stands vehemently for a defenseless minority of human beings who are being denied their God given rights, whose lives are being taken for the sake of convenience for those who claim OWNERSHIP over them. The Democrats are still the party fighting to protect a multi-billion dollar industry akin to the slave trade - except extermination of the of the victims is the ultimate goal in the case of the abortion trade (rather than subjugation).

What a national tragedy it would be for the first black President of the United States to be a man who rejects the very proposition on that proverbial “check” that Dr. Martin Luther King brought to Washington D.C. to “cash” , that proposition from our Declaration of Independence, the brilliance of which Dr. King lauded in his great speech.  Beware of Senator Obama's check, which under closer scrutiny may just prove to be a forgery.

For Obama to have the AUDACITY to imply some type of moral equivalence between himself and the great Abraham Lincoln would be an act of desecration. This is the man who has no compunction about partial birth abortion or leaving a “botched abortion” baby to die alone in a utility closet because the mother's “intent” was to abort it.

If he has the audacity in which he seems to pride himself and he stands there claiming the mantle of Lincoln, how long would it take him to sit down on a throne in the Holy of Holies and demand to be worshiped?

I guess the answer would just be a question of how long it would take to first rebuild the Temple?

Michael Phelps: My new Favorite Pitchman
by MrArbitrage

"Suddenly a newly minted celebrity had betrayed America's impressionable and overweight kids, who will doubtless now line up at the local Wal-Mart to buy pallet-loads of sugary non-fibrous crud."  SOURCE: http://www.marketwatch.com

I was previously aloof to all of the Olympic hype, but now I really admire this young man. The left wing junk food Nazis are aghast - and that's a good thing. Michael Phelps better take out an extra insurance policy to protect his new fortune from the predatory trial lawyers who will soon look to blame him for all America's obesity (as soon as his net worth crosses their threshold).

Maybe Phelps would be a good VP candidate for McCain. He's young, energetic, cosmopolitan and his "stock" has never been higher. Otherwise, I suppose he could serve as Surgeon General. It's not like the Surgeon General has to operate on anybody. I mean, if Joycelyn Elders could do it...

Anyway, I don't know if Phelps has any political affiliation but he should be a Republican because he actually had to work harder and longer than everyone else - and if liberals made the rules, that gentleman he beat out for his 7th Gold Medal probably would have been given the Gold by "handicap" since "Phelps had already won enough" and he only won by a fraction of an inch.

Nevertheless, I hope Phelps continues to surprise us with these types of endorsements deals. It's worth it to get those "politically correct" frauds all riled up. I think Phelps would make an EXCELLENT Marlboro Man.

Disclaimer: I should explain for posterity's sake that I don't particularly favor foods that may cause health problems (for people with no self-discipline).  However, the liberals in this country in their desperation to find an "issue" to give themselves a sense of significance - have made it necessary for freedom loving people to stand up for junk food.

If we do not counter their idiocy, they will chip away at our freedoms; it's that simple.  This is because of the left's refusal to recognize that children are not forced to eat too many bowls of Frosted Flakes or too many Big Macs.  Children are not forced to play the Nintendo Wii all day long instead of going out to play football or baseball.  Parents have a role in this matter.

Common sense and personal responsibility have no place with liberals as they will stop at nothing to destroy every corporation that aims to make a profit.  They even turn on each other - as in a scenario where a corporation was founded by a left-winger but became "target rich" like a Microsoft or Starbucks.

These people are a coalition of anarchists, socialists, communists and trial lawyers all of whom have the same world-view and ultimately the same goal.

I do not smoke and do not want others to smoke but I am well aware of the fact that big government poses a far greater threat to me than "big tobacco" ever will.  Also, I cannot stand those obnoxious "Truth" commercials paid for by my tax dollars.  What a waste of money!  That kind of propaganda should be the first thing to be eliminated from the federal budget, especially in a time of deficit like this.

Oil's Falling but Don't Let up on Outrage over Manipulateive Analysis
by MrArbitrage

"Crude loses more than 1% on week; OPEC points out oil demand slowdown" - Marketwatch.com

Oil longs are holding on like petulant children. It reminds me of the YHOO or AOL “longs” with whom I would continually spar during the Internet/Technology bubble. Those were useful legitimate companies with a future but that was not what I was debating. It was a question of VALUATION – but the longs would have none of that. They just wanted to focus on incessant press releases by the companies and analysts that were “baked in” dozens of times over – in order to justify their delusional $200 BILLION DOLLAR market caps. All the while the investment bankers were getting rich collecting fees from the companies they covered in return for pumping up their common stock with manipulative, b.s. "analysis"

They need to get it through their skulls that it doesn’t matter what is brewing in the Atlantic or what is going on with the Nigerian rebs, Russia or whatever – oil is already priced for the Apocalypse.

Don’t let up. I don’t care if oil goes to $50 per barrel next month; keep that outrage alive until they “hang them high”. Get your elected idiots on the phone and demand legislation to prevent investment bankers from offering ANY “analysis” on commodities essential to human sustenance when they have ANY position in that commodity directly, Indirectly, onshore or offshore.

I would be too embarrassed to admit that the Inflation Data were a Surprise
by MrArbitrage

" WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. consumer prices jumped a greater-than-expected 0.8% in July, marked by big increases in energy, food, clothing and cigarettes, the Labor Department reported Thursday. "

Big surprise??? Only to an isolated Federal Reserve board perhaps.

Don’t sweat it peeps. In the end you’ll be ok – as long as you’re not one of the poor, unsuspecting “bag-holders”, i.e. debt owners, CD buyers and cash holders.

“But - I only want FDIC guaranteed CD’s” you say.

The real guarantee with those vehicles is that as hyper-inflation takes hold, you will watch your standard of living fall headlong into a tailspin. You will wonder why you took solace in a government guarantee that gives you a negative return after taxes and actual, REAL WORLD inflation. I mean, if you want to tell yourself that the government inflation or “core” inflation is the reality – fine – enjoy eating cat food. At least treat yourself to some Fancy Feast.

Oil Dropping bad for the Demagouge Party
by MrArbitrage

The Democrats must be quite disappointed right now as oil has been pulling back.  Judging by the actions of Pelosi and company, they are hoping for higher oil prices so they can drive us into a Great Depression and continue to blame Republicans for it.

Off topic:  I read that Russia’s attack on Georgia over the weekend has already led to 2,000 deaths.  In one weekend, the Russians have killed an amount of people equivalent to about 50% of the total deaths in 5 years of the Iraq war.  Yet I somehow doubt that the Democrats will offer much rebuke toward the Russians because they probably wouldn’t want to offend them being that they have more in common.

Obama's Energy Plan Raises Serious Practicality Questions
by MrArbitrage

In regard to Obama’s energy plan, there are some practical questions that need to be addressed:

How does the Obama Administration plan to enforce His plan to assure proper air pressure in people’s tires?

Will law enforcement conduct random “pull-overs” armed with pressure gauges?

Will they issue tickets to those who are found to be under-inflated?

There are some serious constitutional issues at stake.  Who will be given jurisdiction?

Will jurisdiction be shared by state and local governments or will the Obama Administration use the Interstate Commerce Clause to usurp more state’s rights?

Will He create a new federal agency or will the US Marshalls enforce tire pressure?
And finally - will diplomats, congress and illegal aliens be given immunity?

Voters cannot blithely entrust
this man with the Presidency; these pertinent  questions need to addressed.

Liberals blame Conservatives for church shooting

by MrArbitrage

To my chagrin, I was listening to left wing talk show host Randi Rhodes yesterday as she was claiming that conservatives were responsible for the recent shooting at a Unitarian Universalist church in Tennessee.
Rhodes
was blathering about how Jim D. Adkisson, the “alleged” shooter was found to have possessed books authored by conservatives such as Sean Hannity in his home.

She then proceeded to tell her audience that all of the psychopaths who commit such murders are invariably influenced by Republicans.  Ms. Rhodes actually made the outrageous claim that such psychos are never influenced by liberals.

Yes, there have been some people who while claiming to be conservatives, have done some things that conservatives do not advocate likeshooting abortion “doctors”.
I  think it is worth making the distinction that while conservatives denounce these people and their acttions, liberals like Barack Obama have actually befriended and worked with domestic terrorists like William C. Ayers, a member of the Weathermen terrorist group which sought to overthrow of the U.S. government and took responsibility for bombing the U.S. Capitol in 1971.

Any wack job can do something terrible and claim to have been influenced by someone prominent, without the prominent person ever having known them, as in the case of Jim Adkisson (if he truly had Hannity’s book).

I would remind the antagonistic “Randi Rhodes” of another infamous murderer with many more deaths to his credit - was a big fan of none other than Al Gore.  In fact, not only did they find Al Gore’s book “Earth in the Balance” in the Uni-Bomber’s humble little cabin, it was found that Kaczynski’s manifestos bare a striking similarity to Al Gore’s book.

July 28th,

MrArbitrage on "The Uptick Rule"

I have been hearing an increase in calls for a reinstatement of the “uptick rule”.  According to Liz Claman of Fox Business News, Muriel Siebert, the first female to own a seat on the NYSE said in a July interview that the "shorts must be stopped".

According to Claman, Siebert, who supports reinstating the uptick rule – said that “rumor mongers are taking down good companies just to make a buck”.

Siebert must have a very liberal definition of "good companies.
"The notion that short sellers could “drive a stock to zero” just by “talking it down” is fallacious.

Due to market efficiency, if the company has/had any intrinsic value whatsoever, shorts could not hold it down for long.  If the company’s books are fairly accurate, such a situation would become an arbitrage and those don’t last long.  There are too many smart investors out there who would keep buying a truly"good company"until they owned all of the stock.

If the books are NOT accurate, the company is probably going to 0 with or without an “uptick rule”.  No bureaucratic red tape can palliate the consequences of a bad investment.

In free US markets, if there should be an “uptick rule” – than there should be a “downtick rule”.  Nobody should be allowed to go long on a stock until there is a down tick in price.  Sound fair?
